The Ashgabat Agreement

The GOI requested permission to accede to the Agreement in March 2016. It obtained the agreement of the founding members of the agreement before obtaining formal accession on 3 February 2018[11] The International Transport and Transit Corridor of the Ashgabat Agreement is a multimodal transport agreement between India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Oman, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. India recently acceded to the Ashgabat Agreement, which was introduced in April 2011 to establish an international multimodal and transit transport corridor between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf. The agreement was first signed on 25 April 2011 by Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Oman and Qatar. While Qatar withdrew from the deal in 2013, Kazakhstan and Pakistan joined the group in 2016. The Ashgabat Agreement entered into force in April 2016. The aim is to improve connectivity within the Eurasian region and synchronise it with other regional transport corridors, including the International North-South Corridor (INSTC). The agreement was originally signed on 25 April 2011 by Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Qatar then withdrew from the agreement in 2013, the same year as Kazakhstan`s application for membership, which was finally approved in 2015. [6] [7] Pakistan has also acceded to the agreement since November 2016. [8] [9] India officially joined in February 2018. [10] In 2015, India also signed a bilateral agreement with Tajikistan to improve connectivity. Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are already members of INSTC.

India`s participation in Eurasian connectivity projects under the Ashgabat Agreement will help to approach the integration process in a more practical way within the framework of EAWU and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
