For example, American Airlines may be able to issue the ticket on an American United route, but United may not be able to issue on the same route. A single interline agreement is called a one-sided interline. Airlines may also agree to a bilateral interline agreement in which each airline can issue the ticket to the other carrier. The interline, also known as interline and interline ticketing, is a voluntary commercial agreement between different airlines to treat passengers travelling on routes requiring several flights with several airlines. Such agreements allow passengers to switch from one flight with one airline to another airline flight without having to pick up their baggage or re-register it. Airlines can also promise a free booking change if the service is interrupted due to a delay. The IATA interline framework was created when international markets were liberalized and competition intensified. Since then, multilateral interline has remained important, but it has evolved.
Interline is now operating through closer trade agreements such as code-sharing agreements, joint ventures (JVs) and alliance clusters. Until now, only major network operators such as United Airlines and Lufthansa had electronic ticket interconnection agreements, but IATA`s mandate to remove paper tickets at the end of 2007 changed this situation by requiring smaller airlines to introduce electronic tickets. The global pandemic of COVID 19 has led most airlines to suspend scheduled air services, so new interline relationships could be an important element in the recovery of the industry. Airlines involved in passenger and freight intermediation need transaction agreements to help determine the revenues of different airlines. These agreements are called the Multilateral Prorate Agreement-Passenger (MPA-P) and the Multilateral Prorate Agreement-Cargo (MPA-C). Most online travel agencies only indicate itineraries that can be booked on one of their reservation systems.
